Start your journey in Tunisia, a land of sea, desert and mountains. Immerse yourself in history with a visit to the ruins of Carthage and El Jem, and soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere along the coast to the charming village of Sidi Bou Saïd. Taste the lively atmosphere of the souks of Tunis and soak up the exotic scenery of the medina and religious buildings of Kairouan.

Continue your adventure to dreamy oases and Berber villages with their typical troglodyte dwellings. Finally, experience the desert by camel and Jeep 4X4, and spend a memorable night in a tent in the heart of the Tunisian Sahara.

Then continue your exploration of the Maghreb by flying to Morocco, where you’ll make an extraordinary loop from Casablanca to the seductive coastal town of Essaouira, via Rabat, Assilah, Tangier, Chefchaouen, Fez and Marrakech.

Discover the bustling medinas and souks of Moroccan cities, and take in the atmosphere of delicately ornamented architecture. See the beauty of the religious buildings and the richness of a cultural heritage with French, Andalusian, Moorish and Arab-Muslim influences, recent and past. Day 1:

MONTREAL

  • Departure from Montreal airport (P.E. Trudeau) on a flight to Tunis.
  • Note: Arrival at the airport at least 3 hours before departure.

Day 2:

TUNIS-HAMMAMET (66 km)

Meals included : Supper / Lodging : 5* Hotel / Transport : Air-conditioned vehicle.

 

  • Arrival in Tunis. Welcome and transfer to the hotel for installation.
  • Rest of the day free to enjoy the pool and other hotel facilities.

Day 3:

HAMMAMET-TUNIS-CARTHAGE-SIDI BOU SAÏD-HAMMAMET (167 km round trip)

Departure for a day of discovery:

 

  • Discover the Tunis MedinaA UNESCO World Heritage Site, its rich architectural heritage bears witness to the architectural and artistic influences that have dominated its history. Stroll through lhe souks to meet its merchants.
  • Visit the archaeological site of CarthageCarthage, a city that enjoyed its golden age in the4th B.C., when it had the best war fleet and dominated all trade in the western Mediterranean. Visit the portthe tophet (sacred space dedicated to the worship of divinities) and the Roman public baths of Antoninus the Pious.
  • Continuation to Sidi Bou Saïdone of the most charming villages on the Mediterranean coast, with a collection of pretty blue and white houses. Free time for a stroll.

Return to Hammamet seaside hotel.

Day 4:

TUNIS (Hammamet)-KAIROUAN-TOZEUR (455 km)

Departure for the holy city of Kairouan :

  • Visit the Aghlabite basinsimportant hydraulic works that supplied the city with water as early as the 9th century.
  • Visit the Great Mosquethe city’s emblematic building, the oldest and most prestigious Muslim place of worship in the West.
  • Visit the mausoleum of the Barber which houses the tomb of a fervent companion of the Prophet of Islam who died in battle in the 7th century.
  • Visit of the medina of Kairouanthe oldest city in the Maghreb, converted to Islam by the Arabs in the 7th century and home to a large number of religious buildings (mausoleums, mosques, schools, etc.).
  • Visit the artisanal carpet centera venue showcasing an art form that has been firmly rooted in Kairouan for centuries. Kairouan carpets feature geometric shapes typical of Islamic art, as well as floral motifs derived from traditional Tunisian folk art.
  • Journey across the high steppes and the Tunisian mining basin to Tozeur.

Day 5:

TOZEUR-CHEBIKA-TOZEUR (100 km round trip)

Departure for another day of discovery:

 

  • Tour of the city of TozeurTozeur, a magnificent oasis located between the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert. Discover its typical market and its old quarters.
  • Visit Eden Palm Parkan open-air museum set in a palm grove, where you can learn all there is to know about this fruit and its by-products. On-site tasting of date products.
  • In the afternoon, continuation to the Atlas Mountains and Jeep 4X4 excursion in the Tunisian Sahara.
  • Continuation to Chebikaa Berber village set against a backdrop of ochre-coloured sand and orange-coloured mountains from which flow important springs. Discover the magnificent waterfall with turquoise-blue waters.
  • Photo stop at one of the one of the filming locations for the “Star Wars” movie to capture a sunset over the sand dunes.
  • Return journey to Tozeur.

Day 6:

TOZEUR-CHOTT EL JÉRID-DOUZ-KSAR GHILANE (268 km)

Meals included : Breakfast and dinner /Accommodation : Tented camp /Transport : Air-conditioned vehicle.

 

  • Crossing the great salt lake Chott El Jérid with a photo stop to immortalize this beautiful and somewhat surreal landscape. This is a plain stretching almost 100 km from east to west, flooded seasonally with saline water that limits vegetation.
  • Arrival in Douza town in southern Tunisia at the foot of the great dunes, earning it the title of “Gateway to the Desert”. Dromedary trekking in an extraordinary natural setting.
  • Jeep 4X4 excursion through the Tunisian Sahara, to see these endless stretches of sand.
  • Drive to the Ksar Ghilane camp for an overnight stay night in a tent. The promise of a taste of the freedom of the desert people, the immensity of the sky and the tranquility of this setting of dunes and sand plains stretching to infinity.

Day 7:

KSAR GHILANE-MATMATA-EL JEM-SOUSSE (444 km)

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner / Accommodation: 5* Hotel /Transport: Air-conditioned vehicle.

Departure for another day of discovery to the Matmata region:

  • Escape through the Dahar mountain range and its beautiful lunar landscapes.
  • Visit the village of Matmata and discover the traditional troglodytic houses of the Berber people. These are dwellings dug horizontally, floor by floor, into the mountainside, with a well as the main feature of the house’s central courtyard. These homes were designed to let in just the right amount of light, while keeping them cool and comfortable all year round.
  • Continuation to El Jem to visit theRoman amphitheatre the best-preserved Roman amphitheatre in the country. It was built in the3rd century as a venue for gladiatorial combat, chariot races and circus games. The stadium, built entirely of cut stone, bears witness to the extraordinary genius of Roman engineers. At the time, it could accommodate up to 35,000 spectators.
  • Continuation to the seaside resort of Sousse.

Day 8:

SOUSSE (seaside holiday)

  • A day of relaxation in the magnificent Mediterranean resort of Sousse. Rendezvous with the sea, the sun and the beach.

Day 9:

SOUSSE-TUNIS-CASABLANCA-RABAT (international flight + 233 km)

Transfer to Tunis-Carthage airport and flight to Casablanca.

 

  • Arrival in Casablanca. Welcome and transfer by air-conditioned vehicle to Rabat.
  • Arrival and check-in at hotel.

Day 10:

RABAT-ASSILAH-TANGER (253 km)

Discover the country’s administrative capital, and take a tour of its monuments:

 

  • The Royal Palace (seen from the outside)the former residence of the royal family, now the seat of the Moroccan government.
  • The Hassan TowerThe Hassan Tower, a true symbol of the city and a vestige of a grand mosque project, did not survive the death of its instigator. The tower was to be the minaret.
  • The Mohamed V mausoleumbuilt in the 1960s and located on the esplanade of the Hassan Tower.
  • La Kasbah Oudayaa 12th-century fortified military camp overlooking the Bouregreg river.
  • Continuation along the Atlantic coast toAssilaha charming coastal village renowned for its pretty white houses, tranquility, fishing and artistic life. In the old part of town (the medina), which is surrounded by 15th-century Portuguese ramparts, you’ll find a number of magnificent murals. Assilah also plays host to numerous artistic events (exhibitions, festivals, etc.).
  • Continuation to Tangier and stop at Cape Spartel where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Visit the city of Tangier, with its international past and its European and Oriental character. Discover its kasbah and its medina. Located on the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier is the African continent’s closest city to Europe (33 km as the crow flies from Tarifa in Spain). Its geographical position, long considered strategic for trade, has meant that it has been heavily exposed to foreign influences throughout its history.

Day 11:

TANGER-CHEFCHAOUEN-FÈS (309 km)

Departure for the blue city of Chefchaouen :

  • Drive through the mountains of the Western Rif to Chefchaouenthe central town of the region.
  • Stroll through its charming medina with narrow streets lined with blue-toned buildings housing a variety of craft shops.
  • Discover its important mosques and its Outa El Hamman square square, with its breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and, up close, the red walls of the town’s kasbah, another historic building worthy of note.
  • Continuation to Fez.

Day 12:

Departure for the discovery of the city-museum of Fezthe country’s spiritual capital:

  • Stroll through its medina medieval architecture, home to important religious schools, the Bou-Inania Medersas and the Al Attarine MedersasThese buildings, magnificently decorated with mosaics and carved cedar panels, were erected in the purest Islamic style during the reign of the Ottoman Empire. Visit to the Karaouiyine Mosque and Universityone of the most important spiritual and cultural centers in the Islamic world at the time of its construction (9th century), and a major contributor to the intellectual golden age of this civilization. Karaouiyine has been declared the world’s oldest university still in operation by UNESCO. View from Bab Boujlouda magnificently sculpted monumental gateway at the entrance to the city’s medina.
  • Discover the tanners’ districtThis area of town is home to a concentration of animal hide processing workshops, with their tanning and dyeing basins. Nearby leather stores (babouches, bags, etc.) and other traditional craft shops.

Day 13:

FÈS-MARRAKECH (534 km)

Drive to Marrakech, the country’s major commercial center.

 

  • Discover the Jemaa-el-Fna square. For centuries, this public square was the public court of justice, where defendants were tried and their sentences announced.

Day 14:

MARRAKECH

  • Discover the city of Marrakech:
  • The medinawith its countless souks, is the commercial heart of the city, whose first ramparts were erected in the 12th century. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is listed for several of its monuments:
  • The minaret of the KoutoubiaThe 77-metre-high Koutoubia minaret is the symbol and visual landmark of Marrakech. It is attached to the city’s largest mosque and dates from the 12th century. Its architecture, which incorporates numerous geometric shapes, perfectly represents the austere, uncluttered style of Almohad buildings, a Berber religious group that ruled the region at the time.
  • The Bahia Palaceis a masterpiece of 19th-century Moroccan architecture, built for the grand vizier of Sultan HassanI, who ruled the country at the time.
  • The Majorelle Gardenis a collection of buildings and gardens created by French painter Jacques Majorelle, an artist influenced by the Art Deco movement of the 1920s who fell in love with Morocco, its climate, vegetation and oriental architectural style. Today, the Jardin Majorelle is a museum-garden open to visitors and belongs to the Pierre Bergé-Yves St-Laurent Foundation.

Day 15:

MARRAKECH-ESSAOUIRA (177 km) seaside holiday

Journey to Essaouira :

  • Visit the old Mogador of the Portuguese (fortified town), which bears witness to the passage of this seafaring people along the Atlantic coast of Africa at the time of the great explorations. A place that has retained all its charm, with its port, ramparts, the Sqala of its kasbah (former arsenal) and narrow streets scented with cedar wood.
  • Free afternoon to relax in the magnificent seaside resort of Essaouiraon the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Rendezvous with the sea, the sun and the beach.

Day 16:

ESSAOUIRA-CASABLANCA (347 km)

Journey to Casablanca.

  • Quick tour of Casablanca and its famous cornichea lively district renowned for its beaches, terraces and nightclubs.
  • View of the Hassan II mosquemosque, erected on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. A monumental feat of engineering and architecture, the mosque can accommodate up to 25,000 worshippers under its roof.

Day 17:

CASABLANCA-MONTREAL (international flight)
